Built by a Connecticut couple, it was not your typical heavy, dark wood and stone fireplace mountain retreat.<em> </em>Designed and decorated by the famous David Easton, I immediately tore out the pages to keep in my inspiration file. Fast forward to September and again I spy the same beautiful retreat. I am even more smitten with new images in Veranda Magazine. All the wood in the home was limed, brushed to bring up the grain, and then washed in a pale gray and antique glaze. Notice the gorgeous hand painted wallpaper; it was carefully recreated from a palace in Stockholm. The view is as spectacular as the room décor. David Easton reminds us how to design a room where the decor compliments rather than competes with the view. Very few designers could orchestrate this as masterfully as Easton. The cathedral ceilings and natural wood floors are enhanced by the pale green painted cabinets and soft yellow painted furniture. Notice the chairs are each embellished with the birth dates of owners and their children. He and his wife Karin are credited with the bright colors associated with the Swedish country style. The house was something of a revelation in rural Sweden at the end of the 19th century. Although the traditional bold colors are not really my style or taste, when the colors are more subdued I find the style very charming. And, I do really like this entryway. The painted woodwork in a soft blue and the wonderful detailed painted flower swags are very pretty. In any style and in any decor blue and white is always a classic. The fireplace is hand painted to elicit the feeling of an old fashioned Swedish stove. Again notice the wonderful hand painted walls. Artist Studio To Guest Cottage

Notice the old worn chairs that do not match and floral couch. Everything is broken in and muted. White paint unifies the non matching collection. You can see how the painted concrete floors tie in seamlessly with the outdoor antique brick patio.
